The Catholic schools have created an annual awards dinner to publicly acknowledge the contributions of the many people who, in behalf of Catholic education, have shared their gifts of time, talent and treasure and have given back to the civic community and the Church.

Each school will receive nominations from their school community and a committee from the school will select the winner for each of the three categories: Faculty/Staff, Volunteer, and Benefactor.

After 16 years this annual event will be held at a different venue and format. We continue to honor our schools’ outstanding faculty/staff members, volunteers and benefactors. The event will be held at the El Paso Museum of Art with a reception on the lower level and awards presented in groups of schools in the auditorium located on the second floor. A Teacher of the Year award will be presented for the first time as well as the Superintendent’s Award to an outstanding benefactor, individual or group. Admission will be by ticket but at no charge.

The event will be held on Thursday, January 24, 2013, beginning at 5:30 p.m. with the first group of awards at 6 p.m.

SEED Award Winners

Cathedral High School

FACULTY/STAFF: Brisa Bermea

Appreciated by her peers for her professionalism and willingness to help others, Brisa Bermea is a faculty leader as chair of the Math Department. Mrs. Bermea has provided unfaltering service to Cathedral High School for the past eight years during which she has challenged her students to meet high levels of achievement. She generously gives of her time to moderate various school clubs. As a graduate of the Lasallian Leadership Institute, she endeavors to educate faculty and parents on the Lasallian philosophy through her actions and ideals.

VOLUNTEER: David Alvarez

A graduate of Cathedral in 1986, David Alvarez returned to his alma mater as a parent volunteer in the Irish Basketball Program. His efforts and people skills resulted in much needed resources that served to improve the program. His faith and zeal for excellence make him passionate about raising standards and expectations for both the student-athletes and the coaching staff. Mr. Alvarez’s presence at almost every basketball event truly makes a difference for Cathedral students, parents, and faculty.

BENEFACTORS: Gary Porras, Rick Porras and Gary Paul Porras

Benefactors of Catholic education and the Diocese for a generation, Gary Porras, Rick Porras, and Gary Paul Porras embody true servant leadership. They generously and regularly donate resources and provide construction expertise to further improve Cathedral High School, their alma mater. The school’s fire alarm panel, the venting system for the Broillet lab, and the construction of the Alumni Annex has all been successfully implemented under the supervision and dedication of the Porras family. They have always been champions for Cathedral High School and their commitment has led many others in the El Paso community to renew their confidence in the school. The symbolic value of such a gift should not be underestimated and the stewardship of the Porras family should be applauded.

Father Yermo Schools

FACULTY/STAFF (ELEMENTARY): Yvonne Pina

Always willing to help out any colleague and aid any student, Yvonne Pina has committed her heart and soul to Father Yermo Elementary for the past seven years. She engages her student as active participants in the learning process by introducing innovative lessons and targeting their strengths. Keeping the students as a main priority, Ms. Pina also co-sponsors the National Junior Honor Society.

FACULTY/STAFF (HIGH SCHOOL): Carmen Munoz

Carmen Munoz is much more than a staff member; she is a part of the Father Yermo family. She keeps the book room in meticulous condition, and also organizes school celebrations with great detail. Mrs. Munoz is always eager to decorate the hallways for any season and to help the teachers and student with any cause. A true supporter of the school philosophy, her three daughters graduated from Father Yermo.

VOLUNTEER: Ana Rodriguez

Coordinator of the Home and School Association, Ana Rodriguez is a hard-working volunteer parent and a proud alumnus. Always with a smile, she helps out in the office and around the school, no matter the task. As a model of service, Mrs. Rodriguez has inspired other parents to volunteer. Her love for Father Yermo School is evident in all that she does for the benefit of the institution.

Father Yermo School has benefitted for the last ten years from the support provided by Gracie and Tony Rodriguez. As owners of a local print shop, they provide the school with high quality print work at reduced prices. It is not uncommon for Mr. and Mrs. Rodriguez to expedite the work done for the school and to deliver it personally. A real friendship has developed, persuading Mr. and Mrs. Rodriguez to become benefactors and stewards for the school. Father Yermo is proud to call them partners and friends.

Loretto Academy

FACULTY/STAFF (ELEMENTARY): Jane German

Besides her extensive duties as principal of the elementary school for the last ten years, Jane German plays an intricate role in all the functions of the school. She is supportive of all Loretto events and successfully provides a positive learning environment in the elementary school. She is a proud co-member of the Loretto community and actively serves on numerous committees. Her dedication to the school is deeply appreciated.

This year marks Abe Ramirez’s twelfth year of service to Loretto Academy. His unique kindred spirit enhances his position as Principal of both the Middle School and the High School. Mr. Ramirez shows his unending support and encouragement to the students by being present at all school events. His leadership, gentleness, and sense of humor are greatly admired. He embodies the academy’s mission of faith, justice, community, and respect.

VOLUNTEER: Folole Iremeia

For the past ten years, Folole Iremeia, commonly known as “Flo”, has volunteered her time and talent to benefit Loretto Academy. Flo works tirelessly with the Athletic Department and the Golf Tournament Committee. In fact, any time that help is needed, Mrs. Iremeia gladly volunteers. Her friendly personality lights up any room and has been passed down to her six daughters, three of whom are alumnae and two who are current students at Loretto.

BENEFACTOR: Roberto Moreno and his wife Monica

Roberto Moreno and his wife Monica, have been a part of the Loretto family ever since their two daughters attended the school. Mr. Moreno served on the Board of Directors for nine years and as a chair for six years. Mrs. Moreno, an alumna, recently co-chaired the Jubilee on the Border Luncheon. The Morenos also sponsored the historical exhibit of the Sisters of Loretto in the Borderplex. The Loretto community is grateful that the Morenos continue to share their gifts and talent.

Most Holy Trinity School

FACULTY/STAFF: Larry Aguirre

Although barely in his second year of teaching, Larry Aguirre has gone the proverbial extra mile to create educational opportunities for his students. Not content with fulfilling the required duties of a full-time teacher, Mr. Aguirre has gladly taken on added responsibilities such as moderating the student newspaper, chairing a debate between seventh and eighth graders, sponsoring the school Spelling Bee, and coaching the girls’ basketball team. Most Holy Trinity School is truly blessed by his many endeavors.

Expecting nothing in return, Mr. Roberto Mendoza gladly gives of his time, talent, and treasure to the Most Holy Trinity School community. He has dutifully installed and maintained air conditioners, started up the heating system, and assisted with electrical needs for the Consortium Bazaar. As an active member of the school parish, he oversees Spanish Evangelization, sponsors the Matachines group, and provides the backdrops and scenery for the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Holy Week celebrations. He truly embodies the ideals of stewardship.

VOLUNTEER: Tom Hefner

A devoted father, Tom Hefner joyously volunteers his time to assist his child’s teacher with multiple tasks. However, his dedication is not confined to the classroom. Mr. Hefner has volunteered many hours to painting Father Tom Hall and setting up for fundraisers such as the Consortium Bazaar and the Fall Festival and Craft Fair. His cheerful disposition and unselfish attitude are exemplary.

Our Lady of Assumption School

FACULTY/STAFF: Andrea Koverman

Going above and beyond the call of duty, Andrea Koverman is not only an innovative and dedicated 4th grade teacher, but also serves as part-time assistant principal and assistant volleyball coach. As Assistant Principal, she has been invaluable in helping teachers transition to a new curriculum. On June 24, 2012, she fully dedicated her life to Christ by becoming an affiliate to the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati. Her faith and professionalism serve as models for all that know her.

VOLUNTEER: Lorena Silva

The fact that she was the sole volunteer on the sponsorship committee for the Annual Consortium Bazaar did not deter Lorena Silva’s zeal and enthusiasm. She successfully secured five sponsors in only one month’s time, thus raising a much needed $1,100 for the event. As if being a working mother with four children wasn’t enough, Mrs. Silva has supported the Annual Cattleman’s Dinner to raise funds for the school parish for the past four years. She truly embodies volunteerism.

BENEFACTOR: Paul Irwin

A former parent and currently a grandparent of Our Lady of Assumption students, Paul Irwin has generously shared his many talents to make the school community a better place. Using his carpentry skills, Mr. Irwin created wooden doors to enhance existing shelves in the first grade classroom and built a lectern for the church. He also facilitated traffic flow by painting arrows in the back parking lot. This year, he and his wife generously donated funds for the acquisition of new jerseys for the JV team.

Our Lady of the Valley School

FACULTY/STAFF: Carolyn Harney

A faithful and dedicated Religion teacher at Our Lady of the Valley for the past 16 years, Carolyn Harney strives to mold her students into disciples of Christ. She compliments her ministry by serving as choir director and organist at all the children’s masses. Mrs. Harney shares her talents and time readily and enthusiastically. Her dedication is evident in the simple fact that in all the years she has been at the school, she has only been absent twice!

VOLUNTEER: Armida Leyva

For the past six years, Armida Leyva has been pivotal as a parent volunteer. She cheerfully spearheads student activities and school programs such as the Book Fair. Recognizing that no task is too lowly if done for the glory of God, Mrs. Leyva washes dishes, cleans tables, and mops floors in the cafeteria if the need arises. Her help with decorations and skits for feast days is always forthcoming and deeply appreciated.

BENEFACTOR: Luis Rios and his wife Claudia

Luis Rios and his wife Claudia not only give of their time and talent as volunteers at Our Lady of the Valley, but also give of their treasure by purchasing T-shirts for the summer athletics camp and providing delicious meals for all school events and fundraisers. In fact, they have been a blessing for the school since their two boys enrolled as students eight years ago. Proud owners of a local business, Mr. and Mrs. Rios willingly support one of the school’s most profitable fundraisers by selling chocolate bars at their restaurant on behalf of Our Lady of the Valley School. Their kindness toward the school truly deserves recognition.

St. Joseph School

FACULTY/STAFF: Marisa Alvarado

For the past fifteen years, Marisa Alvarado’s diligence and dedication have made her an integral part of the St. Joseph’s school community. As Administrative Assistant to the principal, she has multiple duties ranging from office tasks to representing the school at all district federal program meetings. Mrs. Alvarado lives her faith through kindness and patience displayed for every student and every family. The fact that her daughter attended the school and her grandson now continues the legacy is proof of her unending devotion to St. Joseph’s School.

VOLUNTEER: Alma Escalera

Her warm smile and cheerful disposition make Alma Escalera an invaluable asset to St. Joseph’s School. Mrs. Escalera faithfully volunteers in the execution of the Accelerated Reader Program, the annual school Book Fair, the Diocesan Raffle Committee, the school Magazine Sale, and the Western Playland committee. Despite her many tasks, she still finds time to help out in the school Uniform Store. She is an exemplary model of service and generosity.

In the true spirit of Christian stewardship, Nora Herrera generously and tirelessly shares her time, talent, and treasure for the benefit of St. Joseph’s School. Mrs. Herrera devotes countless hours to organizing and executing the school Book Fair and overseeing the Western Playland fundraiser. She contributed to the complete renovation of the school building and is planning the celebration of the school’s upcoming 90th anniversary. She also arranged for the El Paso Museum of Art to be the new venue for the SEED Awards celebration. All this she does with grace and elegance. How truly blessed every school would be to have a Nora Herrera as one of their own!

St. Matthew School

FACULTY/STAFF: Erica Robles

Erica Robles has been a faithful and dedicated teacher at St. Matthew’s ever since the school first opened its doors seven years ago. Mrs. Robles not only teaches her fifth-graders the required curriculum but also the much needed elements of sharing and caring for others. On any given day, you can find her conducting a hands-on science experiment, teaching reading and writing, and even doing the hokey pokey. She is an exemplary colleague, loved by all who have the privilege of knowing her.

VOLUNTEER: Mr. Roger Allen

As if being a fireman and school board member isn’t enough, Mr. Roger Allen is also a volunteer custodian at St. Matthew School. At least three times every week, with his son by his side, Mr. Allen diligently cleans windows, sweeps floors, and makes sure that the teachers have everything they need. Like a true steward, he gives of his time, talent, and treasure without expecting anything in return.

A very busy mother of three St. Matthew students, Mrs. Genna Pendergras is a member of the Long Range Plan and Endowment Committee and a founding board member at the school. Mrs. Pendergras was instrumental in finding donors to dig a well for the school and to build a beautiful football and soccer field. She generously purchases classroom materials for teachers and is always willingly to help any family in need. She is a blessing and an example of stewardship.

St. Patrick Cathedral School

FACULTY/STAFF: David Ortega

Truly committed to his job, David Ortega keeps St. Patrick Cathedral School in immaculate condition. As the school maintenance person, Mr. Ortega has multiple responsibilities that he accomplishes effectively and cheerfully. Students, parents, and staff at the school acknowledge Mr. Ortega as a hardworking, kind-hearted man, always willing to help others. He has many friends and deserves much praise.

VOLUNTEER: Christine Hernandez

A devoted aunt, Christine Hernandez jokingly says that as long as her nephew is a student at St. Patrick’s, she will help the school in any way possible. In fact, Ms. Hernandez willingly gives of her time at the annual Grandparent’s Appreciation Breakfast, the school cafeteria, and all fundraising events. Her positive attitude and warm smile inspire all who meet her.

An intelligent, easy-going, humorous individual, Michael Saucedo has been a loyal supporter of St. Patrick Cathedral School. His generosity has allowed the school to provide quality education in a safe environment. Mr. Saucedo is always eager to share knowledge and provide guidance for the betterment of the school and the surrounding properties. Although some years have passed since he graduated from St. Patrick’s, his commitment has been unyielding.

FACULTY/STAFF: Rowena Apodaca

Updating a school library is a daunting task that would normally take several years. Rowena Apodaca updated the St. Pius X library in just six months. She not only increased book circulation but introduced E-books and created a media room for student use. Mrs. Apodaca chairs the popular Library Club, administers the school AR program, and successfully implements Catholic themes in the school library. She has also secured book donations from local businesses in an amount well over $4,000.

VOLUNTEER: Mark Taylor

Proud father of two St. Pius students and president of the St. Pius X School Board, Mark Taylor also served as chairman for the Library Remodeling Committee. Devoting countless hours, he single-handedly removed old book shelves and texturized walls. Mr. Taylor provided all the packing material necessary for the project. Yet, he is most happy when bringing Christmas joy to the students by transforming himself into Santa Claus for the holiday celebration!

BENEFACTOR: Fred Chavira

Despite intense heat, Fred Chavira braved the elements and spent many summer days building book shelves for the St. Pius library. He worked long days at his construction company only to continue working at home for several more hours assembling the beautifully detailed book cases. He is the proud father of three St. Pius students and an active volunteer in the school Cub Scouts chapter.

Always striving to actively engage her students, Rosie Pinon spends a great deal of time researching for lessons to prepare them for the challenges of high school. Martha Flores has been a good friend to the St. Raphael School community for over thirty years, when she and her late husband, Luis, first began taking pictures at the school. Understandingly, they were very proud when their grandchildren joined the student body. Recognizing the financial strain of providing children with a Catholic education, they wanted to help in some way. After losing Luis to cancer in 2007, Mrs. Flores began a scholarship fund in his name to provide financial support for the students at St. Raphael School. Her generosity is deeply appreciated.

Our Lady of the Valley School FACULTY/STAFF: Carolyn Harney A faithful and dedicated Religion teacher at Our Lady of the Valley for the past 16 years, Carolyn Harney strives to mold her students into disciples of Christ. She compliments her ministry by serving as choir director and organist at all the children’s masses. Mrs. Harney shares her talents and time readily and enthusiastically. Her dedication is evident in the simple fact that in all the years she has been at the school, she has only been absent twice! VOLUNTEER: Armida Leyva For the past six years, Armida Leyva has been pivotal as a parent volunteer. She cheerfully spearheads student activities and school programs such as the Book Fair. Recognizing that no task is too lowly if done for the glory of God, Mrs. Leyva washes dishes, cleans tables, and mops floors in the cafeteria if the need arises. Her help with decorations and skits for feast days is always forthcoming and deeply appreciated. BENEFACTOR: Luis Rios and his wife Claudia Luis Rios and his wife Claudia not only give of their time and talent as volunteers at Our Lady of the Valley, but also give of their treasure by purchasing T-shirts for the summer athletics camp and providing delicious meals for all school events and fundraisers. In fact, they have been a blessing for the school since their two boys enrolled as students eight years ago. Proud owners of a local business, Mr. and Mrs. Rios willingly support one of the school’s most profitable fundraisers by selling chocolate bars at their restaurant on behalf of Our Lady of the Valley School. Their kindness toward the school truly deserves recognition. St. Joseph School FACULTY/STAFF: Marisa Alvarado For the past fifteen years, Marisa Alvarado’s diligence and dedication have made her an integral part of the St. Joseph’s school community. As Administrative Assistant to the principal, she has multiple duties ranging from office tasks to representing the school at all district federal program meetings. Mrs. Alvarado lives her faith through kindness and patience displayed for every student and every family. The fact that her daughter attended the school and her grandson now continues the legacy is proof of her unending devotion to St. Joseph’s School. VOLUNTEER: Alma Escalera Her warm smile and cheerful disposition make Alma Escalera an invaluable asset to St. Joseph’s School. Mrs. Escalera faithfully volunteers in the execution of the Accelerated Reader Program, the annual school Book Fair, the Diocesan Raffle Committee, the school Magazine Sale, and the Western Playland committee. Despite her many tasks, she still finds time to help out in the school Uniform Store. She is an exemplary model of service and generosity. BENEFACTOR: Nora Herrera In the true spirit of Christian stewardship, Nora Herrera generously and tirelessly shares her time, talent, and treasure for the benefit of St. Joseph’s School. Mrs. Herrera devotes countless hours to organizing and executing the school Book Fair and overseeing the Western Playland fundraiser. She contributed to the complete renovation of the school building and is planning the celebration of the school’s upcoming 90th anniversary. She also arranged for the El Paso Museum of Art to be the new venue for the SEED Awards celebration. All this she does with grace and elegance. How truly blessed every school would be to have a Nora Herrera as one of their own! St. Matthew School FACULTY/STAFF: Erica Robles Erica Robles has been a faithful and dedicated teacher at St. Matthew’s ever since the school first opened its doors seven years ago. Mrs. Robles not only teaches her fifth-graders the required curriculum but also the much needed elements of sharing and caring for others. On any given day, you can find her conducting a hands-on science experiment, teaching reading and writing, and even doing the hokey pokey. She is an exemplary colleague, loved by all who have the privilege of knowing her. VOLUNTEER: Mr. Roger Allen As if being a fireman and school board member isn’t enough, Mr. Roger Allen is also a volunteer custodian at St. Matthew School. At least three times every week, with his son by his side, Mr. Allen diligently cleans windows, sweeps floors, and makes sure that the teachers have everything they need. Like a true steward, he gives of his time, talent, and treasure without expecting anything in return. BENEFACTOR: Mrs. Genna Pendergras A very busy mother of three St. Matthew students, Mrs. Genna Pendergras is a member of the Long Range Plan and Endowment Committee and a founding board member at the school. Mrs. Pendergras was instrumental in finding donors to dig a well for the school and to build a beautiful football and soccer field. She generously purchases classroom materials for teachers and is always willingly to help any family in need. She is a blessing and an example of stewardship. St. Patrick Cathedral School FACULTY/STAFF: David Ortega Truly committed to his job, David Ortega keeps St. Patrick Cathedral School in immaculate condition. As the school maintenance person, Mr. Ortega has multiple responsibilities that he accomplishes effectively and cheerfully. Students, parents, and staff at the school acknowledge Mr. Ortega as a hardworking, kind-hearted man, always willing to help others. He has many friends and deserves much praise. VOLUNTEER: Christine Hernandez A devoted aunt, Christine Hernandez jokingly says that as long as her nephew is a student at St. Patrick’s, she will help the school in any way possible. In fact, Ms. Hernandez willingly gives of her time at the annual Grandparent’s Appreciation Breakfast, the school cafeteria, and all fundraising events. Her positive attitude and warm smile inspire all who meet her. BENEFACTOR: Michael Saucedo An intelligent, easy-going, humorous individual, Michael Saucedo has been a loyal supporter of St. Patrick Cathedral School. His generosity has allowed the school to provide quality education in a safe environment. Mr. Saucedo is always eager to share knowledge and provide guidance for the betterment of the school and the surrounding properties. Although some years have passed since he graduated from St. Patrick’s, his commitment has been unyielding. St. Pius X School FACULTY/STAFF: Rowena Apodaca Updating a school library is a daunting task that would normally take several years. Rowena Apodaca updated the St. Pius X library in just six months. She not only increased book circulation but introduced E-books and created a media room for student use. Mrs. Apodaca chairs the popular Library Club, administers the school AR program, and successfully implements Catholic themes in the school library. She has also secured book donations from local businesses in an amount well over $4,000. VOLUNTEER: Mark Taylor Proud father of two St. Pius students and president of the St. Pius X School Board, Mark Taylor also served as chairman for the Library Remodeling Committee. Devoting countless hours, he single-handedly removed old book shelves and texturized walls. Mr. Taylor provided all the packing material necessary for the project. Yet, he is most happy when bringing Christmas joy to the students by transforming himself into Santa Claus for the holiday celebration! BENEFACTOR: Fred Chavira Despite intense heat, Fred Chavira braved the elements and spent many summer days building book shelves for the St. Pius library. He worked long days at his construction company only to continue working at home for several more hours assembling the beautifully detailed book cases. He is the proud father of three St. Pius students and an active volunteer in the school Cub Scouts chapter. St. Raphael School FACULTY/STAFF: Rosie Pinon Always striving to actively engage her students, Rosie Pinon spends a great deal of time researching for lessons to prepare them for the challenges of high school. She willingly gives of her time to help bring struggling students up to level. The fact that many of her former students still seek her guidance is a testimonial to her outstanding teaching skills and warm demeanor. Mrs. Pinon truly lives out her faith and is a blessing to our school community. VOLUNTEER: Amelia Smith Currently serving as the co-president of the Home and School Association, Amelia Smith is in charge of multiple fundraiser and activities. Always attentive to any requests made from the principal and teachers, Mrs. Smith exemplifies devotion, loyalty, and stewardship. BENEFACTOR: Martha Flores Martha Flores has been a good friend to the St. Raphael School community for over thirty years, when she and her late husband, Luis, first began taking pictures at the school. Understandingly, they were very proud when their grandchildren joined the student body. Recognizing the financial strain of providing children with a Catholic education, they wanted to help in some way. After losing Luis to cancer in 2007, Mrs. Flores began a scholarship fund in his name to provide financial support for the students at St. Raphael School. Her generosity is deeply appreciated.
